Richard Marshall is a Sussex-based artist, lecturer and demonstrator specialising in oil and gouache paintings, as well as pastel works of landscapes, seascapes and still lifes.
A member of the Pastel Society since 1983, Richard has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions internationally, as well as in London and Sussex. His work is held in private collections across the UK, Europe, and North America.
Inspiration and method
Richard’s work is driven by a love of colour, texture, form and the possibilities of paint. He works mainly with chalk and oil pastels, combining them with watercolour, gouache and oil paint on paper and board.
He builds his paintings in layers, using white spirit, distilled water, gum-arabic and handmade paints and pigments to create rich colour and texture. Working mainly from life, Richard often develops several paintings at once, allowing each to evolve through observation and experimentation.
He continually reworks and adjusts his paintings, believing that the image grows through the process of making.
